My Journey Begins

The newest tiny quilt is my 1"tumbler quilt.  I haven't picked a name for it yet.  The tumbler dates back to the mid 19C.  This quilt is charm quilt as well.  The earliest charm quilt dates to the 1870's.  In fact my quilt was influenced by an existing doll quilt that is made up of charm tumblers.
I found this great ruler to help me with cutting out the perfect size tumblers,  It is meant to cut the blades for a Dresden plate.  So I cut out my lights and darks from my collection of 19C reproduction fabric and then started sewing them together.
From the pen next to the piece you can see how small it is.  After studying it for a while I decided to make two more rows.  It just seemed out of proportion.

Here it is now done and ready for quilting.

One thing you need to remember when doing a tiny quilt is that it can get out of shape easily.  Also a tiny little bit off and the whole quilt will be off.  You need to be sure your seams are exact and your cutting is exact.  I have pinned down my quilt to the backing and batting much more after this photo was taken.
Deciding on how I am going use for a quilting design is going to take some research.  Deciding on how I am going to quilt a quilt is the hardest part of making a quilt for me.  Is it for you?

The next quilt I will write about will be my Halloween Basket quilt.  Till then Happy Quilting.
